Understanding Confined Spaces
Confined spaces are one of the most serious hazards in the commercial seafood industry and can quickly become life-threatening if not managed properly. These spaces are enclosed or partially enclosed areas that are not designed for people to work in continuously and may contain dangerous atmospheres or conditions that increase the risk of injury or death.
Examples of confined spaces in the seafood industry can include fuel tanks, fish holds, sealed void spaces, chemical storage areas, battery compartments, and sullage tanks. Many confined spaces have restricted entry and exit points, making emergency rescue difficult if something goes wrong.
