What happened

I recently joined a vessel for the first time in a position of responsibility –as the skipper. I had come from several other fishing boats, but stepping onto this one made it instantly clear how well things could operate with the right planning and processes in place. I was so impressed to see clear policies, practices, and a culture on the vessel that every single crew member knew about and worked to meet. They had open communication, respect for each other and the boat’s equipment, and everyone just seemed to know exactly what to do in almost every work situation. I tell you what, it opened my eyes up to the standards I had been allowing on other boats, and taught me a life long lesson I think is worth sharing – If you invest in settings things up properly from the get go, you will save time and reap the rewards of a safe and happy crew into the future.

What we learned

Planning and setting your expectations upfront make work a safer and more harmonious place to be! Take the time and enjoy the ride!

Tips and tools

Practices of good communication, respect and understanding between crew members can be gained through simple practices like planned and structured onboarding and regular training. A clear action plan for all procedures should be agreed upon in advance, and checklists should be used throughout the process ensuring everyone on the team understands them clearly.
